FAQ

Online Dog Obedience Training

  • Do I have to have a Zoom account to take dog training lessons virtually?
Nope! We cover that, so you'll just receive a link to join the meeting. We do recommend you try out Zoom before your first lesson, so we can jump right into the training. Here's a breakdown of how to join a Zoom meeting for the first time: Open the email or calendar invitation: Find the email or calendar invite from the meeting host. Click the meeting link: This will take you to the Zoom platform. Download the Zoom app (optional): If you're prompted, download the Zoom app for a better experience. If you don't want to download the app, you can join from your browser, but you may have limited functionality. Join the meeting: Once you're in Zoom, you'll be able to join the meeting by clicking "Join." Follow instructions: You might be placed in a waiting room or directly admitted to the meeting, depending on the host's settings. Tips for first-time Zoom users: Arrive early: If you're new to Zoom, it's a good idea to arrive a few minutes early to download the app (if needed) and familiarize yourself with the interface. Test your audio and video: Before the meeting starts, take a moment to test your audio and video to ensure everything is working properly. Use the Zoom support resources: If you encounter any issues or have questions, Zoom's support website (support.zoom.us) has a wealth of information, including tutorials, videos, and FAQs. You can also contact support directly via phone or email.
  • What if I'm bad with technology?
That's ok, we try to make it easy! You'll receive an email with a link to your meeting. Click that link 5-10 minutes before your start time. You may need to click on the camera to turn on your video, or the mic to turn on your microphone. If all else fails, there's a chat we can utilize to troubleshoot common issues. If we have to cancel your lesson for technical difficulties, Chris will reach out to conduct a free troubleshooting meeting with you. Once you're comfortable with the technology, we'll get your make-up lesson scheduled.
  • Can virtual dog training fix any training problem?
We believe that "Virtual" Online Dog Training, Live One-on-One Lessons with qualified trainers, can be an effective platform to address a wide variety of training needs. Part of our strategy is matching you with a trainer with expertise or specialty in your specific area of need. We are, however, limited in some ways by not being able to "put hands" on your dog. This means that one of our biggest focuses is improving YOUR knowledge and abilities, since you are the one putting in the work with your dog. If a situation arises where In-Person training is required to meet your goals, our top priority will be to help you identify the best local resources available to you. Whether that's another trainer, your vet, or a veterinary behaviorist - we're happy to work as part of a team dedicated to your success.
  • How many sessions will I need?
That depends on your situation! A lot of factors go into the timeline of your training journey. Your first session with us will include a training plan outline, which represents the steps we'll need to take to achieve your goals. But the thing that YOU have the most control over is the amount of time you put in. Like most skills: the more work you put in to it, the more you'll get out of it.
  • Can you teach my dog to be a service dog?
We DO NOT offer Service Dog training at this time. There is a lot of work we would need to put in to qualifying the efficacy of such a program. We CAN offer support with some of the secondary skills a service dog or other working dogs would need. Environmental Stability, Public Access, Loose-Leash-Walking / Heeling, for example. We can also offer foundational training for some basic tasks, like picking up dropped keys or opening doors, for example. Some of our trainers have even trained their own dogs to alert to medical conditions, and can share their experiences with you. This is anecdotal information and not intended to be a substitute for formal Service Dog training. Again, we DO NOT certify or claim to train Service Dogs.
  • What equipment do I need for virtual dog training lessons?
For Training: For most basic needs, you just need yourself, your dog, some treats or toys, a relatively quiet space, and maybe a leash. If you have advanced needs, or specialized goals, you'll need any related equipment. (Discs, Stage Marks, a Teeter, Grooming Table, Head Halter, or whatever else applies). For Technology: You'll need a smartphone, tablet, or computer that can handle a video call. You can optionally use a tripod, wireless headphones, or other items to make your sessions easier.
  • How old does my dog need to be for us to start training?
We can help owners with dogs of any age! In fact, we've even worked with families BEFORE they get their dog - evaluating potential adoptions, talking through preparing your house, and more. There are still some age restrictions based around training specific behaviors. For example: We won't teach high flying disc moves until your dog is 18-24 months but we can work on safe foundations right away. We won't expect your 8 week old pug to have a perfect heel through a carnival, but we can help you set realistic expectations and work towards your goals.
  • Does the whole family need to be there for lessons?
For most needs, NO the whole family doesn't need to attend. But if your challenges and goals involve the whole family, it's definitely better to have everyone present. In those situations, you've probably already tried everything you can think of to get your family on the same page. So leverage your trainer by having your family hear it directly from an expert. Sometimes this is the catalyst for change you've been hoping for. Of course, family members are always welcome in our lessons. We just want to make sure it's not impacting your ability to get value from our time together!
  • What additional costs should I expect? Do I have to buy anything during/after my lesson?
We don't have hidden fees, unexpected additional purchases, or upcharges. The amount you spend on additional lessons is dictated by your training plan, and your choice to continue working with your trainer. Anything you need to buy related to training are just the supplies, tools, or equipment necessary to achieve your goals.
  • My dog is deaf/has a health issue/is disabled. Can we still train him?
Definitely! We have worked with multiple dogs who have a variety of disabilities, such as blindness, deafness, leg amputations, chronic skin conditions, hip dysplasia, and more.
  • Can you work with dogs who have dietary restrictions or are picky eaters?
Yes! We ask that families who have dogs with significant dietary restrictions please include that information in your intake. Food is our most reliable reinforcer in most situations, but we can discuss your dog's special circumstances to determine the best training solutions for you.
  • Do you offer any guarantees?
Yes and no. We guarantee that we will be at your lesson, focused and ready to tackle your challenges. We guarantee that will strive to support you, educate you, and motivate you to meet your goals. We guarantee that we will develop a training plan with your real life time constraints in mind, developed with your agreement. We cannot guarantee that you will meet your training goals, but if we put in the time and work hard together, we believe you'll be happy with the results.
  • Do you train spouses or children?
This truly is one of our most Frequently Asked Questions! Although the behavioral concepts we implement DO reflect methods that work in humans, we're much better suited to answering questions about your dog!
  • Do I have to pay extra to include my other dogs in the session?
Absolutely not! You're paying for a block of time with an expert trainer. However you choose to use that time is entirely up to you!
